Chinese Herbs Containing Gluten and Potential Allergens

Although not frequently found in the Chinese material medica, there are a few herbs containing gluten that may be problematic for patients with food sensitivities, and especially for those with celiac sprue. People with soy or nut allergies may also be advised to avoid certain herbs. Chinese Herbal Medicine News: FDA Rules

Herbal practitioners should be aware that the FDA has been actively working to establish regulations for the distribution and use of herbs and herbal products in the U.S. They issued what is called the "Final Rule" on June 22, 2007, establishing cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practice) guidelines for dietary supplements (a term which includes herbs).
